Feeling the pressure of the election?
A May 2024 survey conducted by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) revealed that 73% of U.S. adults reported feeling anxious about the upcoming 2024 election. This figure is part of a broader trend of increasing anxiety among Americans, with 70% expressing concern about current events, particularly the economy (77%) and gun violence (69%) as additional sources of stress.
The poll, which surveyed over 2,200 adults from April 9 to 11, 2024, indicated that anxiety levels have risen compared to previous years. For instance, 43% of adults reported feeling more anxious than the previous year, up from 37% in 2023 and 32% in 2022. Key factors contributing to this anxiety include stress (53%) and sleep issues (40%) impacting mental health.
Overall, the survey highlights a significant concern among Americans regarding the mental health implications of political and social issues, with many adults feeling that these factors are affecting their well-being.
