Let’s Talk About: Overthinking

Overthinking Isn’t Insight
It’s your mind trying to feel safe.

When your brain won’t stop analyzing, it’s not clarity—it’s protection.

What Overthinking Actually Is

Overthinking is repetitive, unproductive thinking disguised as problem-solving.

It often sounds like:

“What if I made the wrong choice?”
“I should’ve said something different.”
“What if this goes badly?”

You replay conversations, imagine worst-case scenarios, second-guess decisions, and carry stress that hasn’t even happened yet

Key idea:
If it’s not leading to action, it’s a loop—not a solution.

Why We Do It

Your brain overthinks to:

  • Avoid uncertainty
  • Prevent mistakes
  • Create a sense of control

But here’s the problem: It trades short-term comfort for long-term anxiety.

Overthinking keeps you stuck instead of helping you move forward.

How to Interrupt It

Try this in the moment:

  1. Name it: “I’m overthinking.”
  2. Ask: “Is this useful or just familiar?”
  3. Shift to action:
    • Make a decision
    • Set a limit (“I’ll think about this for 10 more minutes”)
  4. Return to your body:
    • Walk, stretch, cold water, breathe

Not every thought deserves your attention. Not every worry needs a solution right now.

Clarity comes from action—not rumination.

Reframe

You don’t need to think more.

You need to trust more.

  • Not every decision will feel certain
  • Not every outcome can be controlled
  • Not every thought deserves your attention

You can move forward without having it all figured out.

If overthinking is affecting your sleep, relationships, work, or daily life, support can help.
