Let’s Talk About: Nervous System Regulation
It’s not about never feeling stressed.
It’s about helping your body feel safe enough to move through stress.
Your nervous system is always asking: “Am I safe?”
When your brain or body senses danger—whether real, emotional, or perceived—it can activate your stress response.
This can happen even when you know you’re technically okay.
Signs your nervous system may be dysregulated:
• Feeling constantly on edge
• Overthinking everything
• Irritability or emotional reactivity
• Feeling shut down or disconnected
• Difficulty sleeping
• Trouble concentrating
• Feeling exhausted but unable to relax
Regulation doesn’t mean forcing yourself to calm down.
Sometimes regulation looks like:
Taking a slow breath
Going for a walk
Listening to music
Talking to someone safe
Resting without guilt
Naming what you’re feeling
Creating predictability and routine

4 things you can feel
3 things you can hear
2 things you can smell
1 thing you can taste
Your senses can help bring your attention back to the present moment.
You don’t have to regulate alone.
Healthy relationships, supportive communities, and therapy can all help your nervous system learn that connection and safety are possible.
Sometimes healing happens in relationship with another person.
Your nervous system is not “too sensitive.”
It may be responding to what it has learned to expect.
With awareness, support, and practice, you can learn new ways to respond.
You are not your stress response.
